  • 1 large Egg Acts as a binder.
  • ⅓ cup Bread Crumbs (panko or regular) Adds texture.
  • 1 tsp Salt Enhances flavor.
  • ½ tsp Black Pepper Adds warmth.
  • ½ tsp Onion Powder Infuses patties with onion flavor.
  • 1 clove Garlic, minced Complements the beef.
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce Adds umami flavor.

For the Onion Gravy

  • 1½ cups Onions, thinly sliced Caramelized for sweetness.
  • 2 tbsp All-Purpose Flour Used to thicken the gravy.
  • 1 cup Beef Broth Forms the base of the gravy.
  • 1 tbsp Oil For frying.

Optional Garnish

  • 1 tbsp Fresh parsley for garnish Adds freshness.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, salt, black pepper, onion powder, minced garlic, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
  • Form the mixture into thick, hearty patties, about ½ inch thick.

Cooking

  • In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Once the oil shimmers, add the patties to the skillet. Cook for about 5 minutes on each side, or until browned.
  • After flipping the patties, add the sliced onions to the pan to caramelize alongside the patties.
  • Once the patties are cooked, remove them from the skillet and set aside. Sprinkle the flour over the drippings left in the pan. Whisk continuously as the flour cooks for about a minute.
  • Gradually pour in the beef broth, whisking until the mixture thickens into a rich gravy.
  • Return the patties to the skillet, spoon the thick gravy over them, and let them simmer together for about 5-10 minutes.

Serving

  • Serve the Hamburger Steaks hot, topped with the savory onion gravy. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

Choose ground beef with a good fat ratio for juiciness. Don't overmix the beef mixture to ensure tender patties. Allow onions to caramelize properly for the best flavor.
