  • 1 cup warm water Helps activate the yeast.
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast Creates a fluffy coating.

  • 0.5 teaspoon kosher salt Enhances the flavor.
  • 0.5-1 cup Panko breadcrumbs Adds crunch and texture.

Filling Ingredients

  • 3 pieces hot dogs (cut in half) Provides a savory bite.
  • 8 oz block of cheese (cut into the width of hot dogs) Use a good melting cheese.
  • 0.33 cup nacho cheese or mayo (optional) Adds extra flavor.
  • 1 bag chips (optional) For a crunchy side.

  • mustard (for dipping) Adds a tangy kick.
  • sugar (for sprinkling on top) For a sweet finishing touch.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and white sugar. Allow the mixture to sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • In a larger bowl, mix together the flour and kosher salt. Pour in the foamy yeast mixture and stir until smooth. Cover the bowl and let it rise for about an hour until it has doubled in size.
  • Slice the hot dogs in half and cut the cheese to match the width of the hot dogs. Thread each halved hot dog onto a skewer, followed by a piece of cheese.

Cooking

  • In a deep frying pan, heat oil to around 350°F (175°C).
  • Dip each skewer into the prepared dough, ensuring that the hot dog and cheese are well-coated. Roll in Panko breadcrumbs.
  • Fry in small batches for about 3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oil and place on paper towels to drain.
  • Drizzle with nacho cheese or mayo, if desired, and sprinkle with sugar. Serve hot with ketchup and mustard on the side.

Notes

For a healthier alternative, consider using turkey or chicken sausage and whole wheat flour. To avoid common mistakes, ensure you use warm water and don't overcrowd the frying pan.
