Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and powdered sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  • If using, stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Gradually mix in the all-purpose flour and salt until a soft dough forms.
  • On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about ½ inch thick.
  • Cut out shapes with cookie cutters or a knife.
  • Chill the cut cookies in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes.
  • Bake the cookies for 15–18 minutes, or until the edges are just golden.
  • Allow cookies to rest on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
