Ingredients

For the bread

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Soft and fluffy, providing a tender crumb.
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder For that perfect rise, ensuring a light texture.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt Enhancing flavor for a delicious, savory bread.
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted Rich and creamy, adding moisture and depth.
  • 1/2 cup milk Creamy and aromatic, marrying all the flavors together.
  • 1 large egg Binding the ingredients with its smoothness and richness.
  • 1/4 cup warm water Activating the yeast, giving the bread life.
  • 1 teaspoon sugar Feeding the yeast and helping it bloom.
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast Essential for a delightful fluffiness.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for frying) Producing a lovely golden crust.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup of warm water, 1 teaspoon of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of active dry yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
  • Make a well in the center of your dry mixture and pour in the yeast mixture, 1/4 cup of melted unsalted butter, 1/2 cup of milk, and 1 large egg. Stir gently until a soft, sticky dough begins to form.
  • Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Place your dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours or until it has doubled in size.
  • Gently punch down the dough to release air, shape it into a loaf, and let it rise for another 30 minutes.

Cooking

  • Heat a non-stick skillet over medium-low heat and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
  • Carefully place the dough into the skillet, cover it, and cook for about 5-7 minutes on each side, until it turns golden brown.
  • Once cooked, let the bread cool for a few minutes, and then slice it up.

Notes

Keep your dough slightly sticky but manageable. Make sure your yeast is fresh for good rising action, and maintain gentle, steady heat on the stovetop to avoid burning the bread. Consider healthier options like whole wheat flour or adding seeds for nutrition.
